Following on from the Woodbrook Eco Village Master plan, Llewelyn-Davies (now Urban Studio, Tribal Consulting) were commissioned by the Carvill Goup to design a detailed layout for Phase I of the new mixed use development.
This 10Ha site provided a major opportunity to implement the new quality agenda in the design of residential and mixed use areas; move away from standards led layouts to creating places with character. The layout illustrates a softer approach to highway design which promotes pedestrian priority and human scale. Streets are well defined by building frontages and parking is provided in a variety of ways to create a layout which is not car dominated. A wide range of housetypes enable the creation of a mixed community and dual use groundfloor spaces encourage commercial activity along the High Street.
As the lead designer, my role was to project manage and design the layout, liaising with the local planning and highways authorities and working closely with the developer and the architects. The layout provides for 371 dwellings at an overall density of 35 dwelling per Hectare. The development is currently on site with the fist phase nearly completed.
