Designing the refurbishment of the War Memorial and Burial Site was commissioned by the parish of Oulu. The aim was to retain the original character of the burial grounds whilst improving its accessibility, lighting and ease of maintenance. Whilst retaining the layout of the site, the pathways between the rows of gravestones were lowered to surrounding ground level to make it easier for the elderly people to visit the graves.
A Memorial Garden at the edge of the site was also refurbished. The pond was realigned with stone, new planting groups and a seating areas introduced. The whole edge of the area was lined with trees to make the garden more secluded. The entrance to the area was refurbished for better disabled access. New lighting and furniture was added to provide further mprovements. Directional lighting as well as lights embedded to the edges of the paths help the legibility and overall appearance of the area. New seats were chosen to fit in with the design of the various elements and special attention was paid to the ergonomics of the furniture. Construction was completed in autumn 2007.
