Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, Llewelyn-Davies provided the planning and urban design inputs for the design of a tramline linking the suburban centre of Kirkby to Liverpool city centre.
As the lead designer my tasks included carrying out an audit of the proposed route and reviewing the proposed alignment and stop locations. The aim of the work was to create a tram route, which would fit into the existing street network harmoniously, maximise catchment areas for the service as well as consider possible opportunities for regeneration.
The second part of the project was to produce both generic and location specific urban design guidance for the design of the Merseytam. The guide has been very well received and it has become a key document for the Merseytram project as well as other similar work in the field. Llewelyn-Davies continue to be involved in the project and the design of new routes linking the outer urban areas with Liverpool city centre.
