An overgrown sea bay by a steel manufacturing plant in the northern parts of Finland is popular with a variety of migratory and native birds. As a result it is a place of interest also for many birdwatchers. To encourage the use of the area for recreation the Regional Environmental Council commissioned the design of a bird watching tower and a nature trail around the bay. The design of the bird watching tower is organic, the form of a snail shell which can be gently climbed to the top.

The design differs from the typical designs which usually require the climbing of steep steps or a ladder to the top of the tower, especially difficult for the elderly or if carrying heavy equipment. The cor-ten steel structure will darken over the years and blend in to the surrounding environment. The forms of the seating and fire places along the trail are also organic and once built they will form an interesting addition to the unusual bay environment where industry and nature coexist in harmony. The bird watching tower was opened to the public in June 2008.
