This project was a part of a community art workshop which took place in the southern archipelago of Finland. With a critical awareness of the difficulties in community art projects, the aim here was to engage with a communty in a way that places the artist and the community at the same level and creates a situation where both parties are equally challenged, and rewarded.

Through correspondence with a member of the Barösund community, Etti Björklöf, this project explored the concept of simultaneous existence of two different individuals in different communities: That of the nomadic artist and a member of the old fishing community in Barösund.

Letters were exchanged on a given date each month. Each letter covered certain predefined topics as well as including a more informal exchange of news. Each letter also contained a polaroid picture, subject matter of which was free, taken on that date. After a year of correspondence, when twelve letters were exchanged, a meeting took place in Barösund. The experience was discussed over a home prepared fish meal.

The outcome of the project for both parties was not only a new friendship but an awareness of another community very different from your own. It also provided a platform for future possibilities for to engage and work with the community. The project also provided a more tangible, immediate outcome: The letters, newspaper clippings and the polaroid pictures, provided a curious medium to contemplate the world we live in.
