The aim of this project was to explore the concept of natural and human defined space and scale. What is really a human scale? Is it only a physical definition? What effect does the scale of our environment have on us?
The work consisted of measuring a typical one bedroom Helsinki apartment and building its outlines on the slopes of Saana, a mountain with panoramic views of the surrounding tundra landscape in Lapland. Jutapoxing what is the commonly accepted "human scale" with a vast natural landscape, it was possible to begin to question the concept of physical human scale, and how it compares with a less recognised concept of a "mental human scale".
